Lesser Cryptids of Greater Appalachia

I’ve co-edited and contributed to a folk horror anthology! Out now from Brood XIV Books, at https://broodxiv.com.

The collection of stories from fifteen regional writers contains folk stories and legends about strange encounters in a range of Appalachian settings. While it has a concentration of West Virginia writers, at least half of the stories take place outside of West Virginia, from as far north as the New York Catskills and south to north Georgia where the AT begins/ends.

Cryptid tales, cryptid-hunters, and everyone making cryptid art tend toward the same handful of Mothman and Bigfoot legends. But the mountains have so much more – durable tales of strange creatures that I promise you’ve never heard of before.

The cryptids tales in this collection are not supernatural in nature; while there could be paranormal explanations for some of them, others do not have any supernatural element at all.

Brood XIV is a press created for the purpose of publishing independent horror. Another collection is planned in 2026 for stories with a definite supernatural tilt. We hope that many of the fine tales we received during submissions will fit into this second book.
